the story of bellairs research institute
i’m back. actually, i’ve been back since sunday night, but i haven’t gotten a chance to blog since then.
so, you may be wondering why mcgill university has a research facility in barbados. well, it was donated by a commander in the (british, i think) royal navy in memory of his wife. he apparently thought a research institute would help the bajan (that’s bay-jen, not bah-han) economy.
apparently he tried to give it to the university of toronto first, but they turned him down.
mcgill once had a pretty decent marine biology program (i gather), but it can no longer support bellairs on its own. thus, the computer science department gets it for a good chunk of the year.
anyway, that’s how there came to be a computer science workshop in barbados (first annual, i hear).
